In brief
Whale-watching boats leave from Rainbow Harbor beside the Aquarium of the Pacific: Harbor Breeze Cruises from Dock 2 and Harbor Cruises from Dock #3; LA Waterfront Cruises names Long Beach as a base without a Long Beach address. Operators give gray whales as roughly November or December to April and blue whales as May to October or November, and no source gives dates for the 2027 season.
- Duration: Harbor Breeze and LA Waterfront Cruises both say tours take about 2.5 to 3 hours17.
- Prices as published: Harbor Breeze walk-up adult fares of $50 (Monday to Friday) and $55 (Saturday and Sunday); LA Waterfront Cruises adults $45; the Aquarium sells a cruise plus admission combination at $80.95 for adults247.
- Aquarium cruise times: “Daily, cruises at 12:00 p.m. & 3:00 p.m.” with check-in at the booth on Dock #24.
- Parking: Harbor Breeze says it validates parking at the Aquarium of the Pacific structure, “reducing your rate from $16 to $8”1.
- Sightings: Harbor Breeze says it “cannot guarantee specific sightings”1.
This page sets out what the operators and the Aquarium of the Pacific publish about whale watching from Long Beach, as of October 2026: where each boat leaves, what each says about the season, what it charges and what the Aquarium’s cruise includes. For how the waterfront connects to the rest of the city, start with the section pillar, Getting In and Out of Long Beach.
The operators’ pages are sources only for their own facts. They disagree with each other, and sometimes with themselves, on season start dates and prices, and the sections below show each statement next to its source rather than averaging them.

Source: the operators’ own pages, as of October 2026. Davey’s Locker and other operators that sail from outside Long Beach are not covered.
Harbor Breeze offers “both morning and afternoon departures from Long Beach” and says tours take “approximately 2.5 to 3 hours”1. It asks passengers to arrive “at least 20-30 minutes before your scheduled departure” and recommends booking in advance “especially during peak whale migration seasons”1. The page text read for this guide prints no exact departure times; its booking widget did not render. LA Waterfront Cruises prints its own: weekdays at 10 a.m., and weekends at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.7.
Harbor Cruises’ page names naturalists and “year-round activity” and prints no prices or times8.
The Aquarium's cruise and combined ticket
The Aquarium of the Pacific’s page describes a cruise with Harbor Breeze Cruises and its naturalist team. Passengers “Check in with your tickets at the booth on Dock #2 in Rainbow Harbor”, and the schedule reads “Daily, cruises at 12:00 p.m. & 3:00 p.m.”4.
| Ticket (Aquarium page, as of October 2026) | Adult | Child (3-11) | Senior (62+) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cruise plus Aquarium admission | $80.95 | $64.95 | $75.95 |
| Cruise for Aquarium members | $45 | $32 | $38 |
Source:4. The page says the member prices “are provided by Harbor Breeze, an outside partner”. The Aquarium’s phone is (562) 590-3100, ext. 04. Admission, timed entry and garage parking are in Aquarium of the Pacific: Parking, Validation, Timed Entry and Tickets.
Official pages disagree The Aquarium’s whale-watch page gives the second cruise as 3:00 p.m.4. An undated Aquarium blog post says that “from July 1” the schedule changes to “12pm and 3:30pm” for blue whale season5. Plan around midday and mid-afternoon, and confirm the time on the ticket.
Season statements, by source
| Source | Gray whales | Blue whales |
|---|---|---|
| Harbor Breeze, Long Beach page | “typically between November and April” | “between the months of May and November” |
| Harbor Breeze, FAQ block on the same page | “roughly December through April” | “typically May through November” |
| LA Waterfront Cruises7 | “from December through April” | “from May through October” |
| Harbor Cruises8 | “winter and spring prime times” | “frequently seen during the summer and early fall months” |
| Aquarium, gray whale species page (last updated April 3, 2020)6 | Peak southern migration “mid-February”, later “late February” | Not stated |
Source:1 for both Harbor Breeze rows, then the sources marked, as of October 2026.
Official pages disagree Harbor Breeze’s own Long Beach page gives the gray whale season as “typically between November and April” in one section and “roughly December through April” in its FAQ block1. The Aquarium’s species page places the peak southern migration in “mid-February” and a few sentences later in “late February”, and says impregnated females leave Baja “as early as late January” and cow-calf pairs “do not leave Baja until April”6. Read the range as about December to April with a peak around February, and not as a promise for any month.
Harbor Breeze adds that humpbacks reach California “during the summer months”, fin whales appear “at various points throughout the year”, dolphins “year-round”, and that “There is not necessarily a greater percent chance at any given time”2. No operator and not the Aquarium states a 2027 season date.
Prices as published
| Source (as of October 2026) | Adult | Senior | Child | Infant |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Harbor Breeze walk-up2 | $50 (Monday to Friday), $55 (Saturday and Sunday), ages 12+ | $45 (62+) | $35 (3-11) | Free (under 3) |
| LA Waterfront Cruises7 | $45 (12 and up) | $40 (63 and up) | $30 (4-11) | Not stated |
| Aquarium cruise plus admission4 | $80.95 | $75.95 | $64.95 | Not stated |
Harbor Breeze also lists a 45-minute narrated harbor tour at “$15” (“Prices starting at”)13. Its FAQ says online purchase saves “$$ off adult and senior citizen tickets” and gives no amount2.
Official pages disagree Harbor Breeze’s Long Beach page is titled “$35 All Kid Tickets”, and its tours page lists the Long Beach Whale Watching & Dolphin tour, “2.5 Hour Tour”, at “Prices starting at” “$35”, with “Pricing subject to change based on availability”13. Its FAQ gives $35 as the children’s walk-up price and $50 to $55 for adults2. The $35 is not the adult fare; the Aquarium’s $80.95 is a different product, a cruise bundled with admission4.
What the pages say about the boat
Harbor Breeze’s FAQ lists “multiple restrooms”, an onboard snack bar selling chips, popcorn, candy, soda, water and beer, high railings and non-skid decks, and U.S. Coast Guard inspection. It suggests dressing “in layers” and wearing closed-toe shoes2. It does not state wheelchair access on the pages read.
Sightings are not guaranteed: Harbor Breeze says “we cannot guarantee specific sightings”1.
Parking and getting there
Harbor Breeze recommends the Aquarium of the Pacific parking structure: “Harbor Breeze validates parking, reducing your rate from $16 to $8”, and its FAQ says “$8 with validation from our ticket booth”12. Other downtown garages and rates are in Downtown Long Beach Parking by Trip. Transit and water taxi options are covered in Long Beach Without a Car. The site earns a commission on some hotel, ticket, transfer and parking links, which does not affect what is recommended.
Tours worth considering

The operators’ own pages, covered above, are where the season statements and the walk-up prices live. Two listings sold through Viator depart from Long Beach and are worth naming for what their listings state:
- You want a narrated whale-watching trip from the downtown waterfront. See the guided whale watching tour from Long Beach. The product page names the meeting point as Harbor Breeze Whale Watching Cruises, “100 Aquarium Way Dock #2”, lists “Expert educators from the Aquarium of the Pacific” among the inclusions, gives the trip as 2 to 2.5 hours with free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and marks it wheelchair accessible9.
- You have 45 minutes, not three hours. See the Long Beach Harbor 45-minute boat tour. The product page describes a 45-minute narrated cruise past the cruise terminal, the Queen Mary, the breakwater and the Aquarium, with ticket redemption at the same Dock #2 or at a San Pedro address; it is a harbor cruise, not a whale-watching trip9.
