How Long Long Beach Takes to Close a 311 Request, by Type

In brief

In the city’s 311 dataset, most request types now close with a median of a few days or less: Graffiti 1 day in each year from 2021 to 2026, E-Scooter 0, and Dumped Items between 5 and 8.3. The long medians are earlier. Street Repair was 507.6 days for requests created in 2022 and 379.0 for 2023, then 2.2 for 2024, a change the page reports but does not explain.

  • The medians cover requests with status Closed or Closed Referred only, grouped by type and the year created, and are computed by the city’s portal; the dataset holds 275,621 Closed and 56,045 Closed Referred requests1.
  • Street Repair 94.7 days in 2021, 507.6 in 2022, 379.0 in 2023 and 2.2 in 2024; Sidewalk Repair 518.5 in 2022 and 3 in 2024; Tree Maintenance 315.0 in 2023 and 6 in 20241.
  • Dead Animal Pickup shows 1,431.5 days for 2020 on 194 closed requests, then 2 for 2021; small counts move a median a great deal1.
  • Another 15,501 requests are In Progress and sit outside every median until they close1.
  • 2020 is partial (from late September) and 2026 is partial (through October 2, 2026)1.

A 311 request has a created date and, once it is closed, a closed date, and the city’s dataset stores the days between them1. This page shows the median of that figure for each request type and each year the request was created, beside the number of closed requests each median rests on. A median is a middle value, so it says what a typical closed request took and nothing about the slowest ones. The definitions for every Data page are in How the Long Beach Data Pages Are Made.

Medians here exist only for requests that have been closed. A request still open does not enter a median, so the most recent year, 2026, is partial in two ways: it covers requests created through October 2, 2026, and only those already closed1.

Source Go Long Beach Service Requests, City of Long Beach open data portal, fetched October 2, 2026; daily refresh by the city. Period: September 2020 to the fetch date; every request in the dataset on the fetch date. Method: Median days from creation to closure, over requests with status Closed or Closed Referred, by type and the year the request was created; the portal computed the medians. Open requests are not in the medians. The figures are this site’s own tallies of the city’s published records, used under the City of Long Beach’s open-data terms; the city does not endorse this site. How these pages are made.

What the medians count

Each median is taken over requests whose status is Closed or Closed Referred, grouped by type and by the year the request was created. A Closed Referred request was passed to another department or agency and closed in the 311 system. Open, cancelled and duplicate requests are not in the median. The city’s portal computes the medians from its own rows, and this site does not recompute them1.

The unit is days as the dataset stores it, and a median can carry a decimal, as 8.3 and 507.6 do. A median of 0 means the middle closed request in that cell shows zero days between its created and closed dates1.

Median days to close, by type and year

The table has one row per type and one column per year created. A blank cell means the dataset has no median for that type and year1.

Graffiti has the steadiest series: 2 days in 2020, then 1 day in every year from 2021 to 2026. E-Scooter shows 0 in every year it appears. Dumped Items, the largest type by volume, ran at 6, 5, 6, 6 and 5 days from 2020 to 2024, then 8.3 for 2025 and 8 for 20261.

Several types fell steadily. Light went from 18 days in 2020 to 10 in 2023, 4 in 2024 and 1 in 2026. Park Maintenance went from 19 in 2020 to 7.2 in 2023 and 3 in 2026. Traffic Signal went from 22.7 in 2021 to 6.3 in 2023 and 1 in 20261.

Report Illegal Firework moves the other way. Its median was 1 in 2023, 3.9 in 2024, 10.9 in 2025 and 11 in 2026, against 28.5 in 2021 and 14 in 20221. Two types appear only for 2026, Report Food Truck Vending Concerns and Report Business Licenses/Permit Concerns, each at 5 days1.

The long medians of 2020 to 2023

The table has a group of very long medians, all for requests created in 2020 to 2023.

Type Year created Median days
Street Repair 2022 507.6
Sidewalk Repair 2022 518.5
Street Repair 2023 379.0
Animal Services 2023 365.2
Tree Maintenance 2023 315.0
Vegetation 2023 290.4
Tree Maintenance 2022 272.9
Running Water 2023 165

All figures in this small table come from the median table above1.

In 2024 the Street Repair median is 2.2 days, the Tree Maintenance median is 6 and the Sidewalk Repair median is 3, down from 379.0, 315.0 and 345.0 a year earlier1. The drop is abrupt and applies to several types at once. The figures are the city’s own, as the dataset records them, and this page does not explain the change.

Two longer medians are in the 2020 column: Dead Animal Pickup at 1,431.5 days and Animal Services at 1,445.5. Those rest on 194 and 54 closed requests, which the next table shows1.

How many closed requests each median rests on

A median is only as firm as the number of requests behind it. This table counts closed requests, meaning Closed and Closed Referred, for each type and year created1.

Request type 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 2026 Total

Restroom Maintenance 4 99 73 66 75 76 55 448

Dumped Items has 132,169 closed requests in total, Graffiti 81,407 and E-Scooter 47,181. The medians for those three types rest on thousands of requests in every year, including 26,642 for Dumped Items created in 20251.

At the other end, the 2020 medians for Dead Animal Pickup and Animal Services rest on 194 and 54 closed requests, and the 2021 Report Illegal Firework median of 28.5 rests on 181. Running Water has 161 closed requests for 2023, the year of its 165-day median1.

Street Repair, by contrast, has substantial counts in the years of its long medians: 1,190 closed requests created in 2022 and 3,616 in 2023, against 4,098 in 20241. A long median there reflects many requests, not a handful.

The two tables do not list the same types. Shoes on a Utility Wire (893 closed requests) and Restroom Maintenance (448) appear in the closed-count table but have no median row, and Report Food Truck Vending Concerns and Report Business Licenses/Permit Concerns have a 2026 median but no row in the count table1.

Every request by status

The status table counts every request in the dataset by its current status, without a split by year or type1.

Status Requests
Closed 275,621
Closed Referred 56,045
In Progress 15,501
Cancelled 2,955
Duplicate 2,316
New 797

Closed is the largest status at 275,621, followed by Closed Referred at 56,045. In Progress holds 15,501 requests, Cancelled 2,955, Duplicate 2,316 and New 7971. Only the first two statuses feed the medians above. The table does not say how long In Progress requests have been open, so it gives no way to judge whether they would change a median once closed.

How to read these figures

Year created, not year closed. A request created in 2022 and closed in 2024 counts in the 2022 median, which is how a year’s median can keep changing as old requests close1.

Medians, not averages. A few very old requests do not move a median the way they would move an average, so the long medians above mean that the middle closed request took that long1.

Small cells. Check the closed count beside any median before comparing types or years1.

Partial years. 2020 starts in late September, and 2026 runs through October 2, 2026 and counts only requests already closed1.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Long Beach take to close a 311 request?

It depends on the type and the year. For requests created in 2026 the medians range from 0 days for E-Scooter to 11 for Report Illegal Firework, with Dumped Items at 8 and Graffiti at 11.

Why were Street Repair medians so long in 2022 and 2023?

The dataset gives 507.6 days for 2022 and 379.0 for 2023, then 2.2 for 2024. The figures are the city’s own, and the page does not explain the change1.

Do the medians include requests that are still open?

No. Only requests with status Closed or Closed Referred are included, and 15,501 requests are In Progress1.

What does a median of 0 days mean?

The middle closed request of that type and year shows zero days between its created and closed dates. E-Scooter shows 0 in every year from 2021 to 20261.

How many requests is a median based on?

The closed-count table shows it for each cell, from 4 for Restroom Maintenance in 2020 to 26,642 for Dumped Items in 20251.

Who calculates the medians?

The city’s open data portal computes them from the city’s rows, using the days-to-close field. This site does not recompute them1.
