Street Sweeping and Permit Parking in Long Beach for Visitors: Posted Hours, the 2026 Holidays, Preferential Districts and the 7-Day Visitor Permit

In brief

Long Beach street sweeping is enforced “Monday through Friday, with some City holidays excepted”, in zones posted for hours “ranging from 5:00 AM – 4:00 PM”, and each side of a street is swept on a different day. The city’s schedule lookup is an interactive map on its Public Works pages, and the sign on the block is the rule the city tells drivers to follow.

  • Sweeping is “conducted weekly”, and vehicles in restricted areas during scheduled cleaning “will be subject to citations”1.
  • “Street sweeping violations are not enforced on the city-observed holidays” the city lists; the page lists 2026 only, and a 2027 list was not posted as of October 20264.
  • “Red, white and blue curbs are always enforced, even on holidays”14.
  • Preferential permit districts need a permit “valid for the district shown on the permit”; guests of residents use temporary permits “valid for no more than seven (7) days”6.
  • The city’s current pages state no street-sweeping fine amount5.

A car left on the wrong side of the wrong street on the wrong morning is the usual way a visit to Long Beach produces a ticket. The city publishes the rules in four places, a Public Works page, the Parking FAQ, the holidays page and the preferential permit page, and none of them prints a block-by-block calendar. This page joins them up as of October 2026. It is part of Getting In and Out of Long Beach; garage and meter rates are in Downtown Long Beach Parking by Trip.

The short answer

If you are… Do this
Parking on a residential street for a day or more Read the posted sweeping sign for the day and hours; the city says “check posted signs for specific days and times”3
Wanting the schedule for an address Use the city’s interactive street-sweeping map on its Public Works pages, “enter your address”1
Parking on a city holiday Sweeping is not enforced on the city’s listed holidays; red, white and blue curbs and signed meters still are4
Parking where a permit district is signed Only a permit for that district is valid; a visitor’s host requests a temporary permit, up to 7 days6
Wondering about rain The city says sweeping “may or may not occur on rainy days”; call (562) 570-28901

What the city publishes about sweeping

The Public Works page says: “Street sweeping is conducted weekly.” It adds: “To access your street sweeping schedule, view our interactive map and enter your address.” and “Vehicles parked in restricted areas during scheduled street cleaning will be subject to citations.”1

The Parking FAQ gives the posted hours: “Parking in street sweeping zones are enforced throughout the City Monday through Friday, with some City holidays excepted. Areas are posted for various hours with time zones ranging from 5:00 AM – 4:00 PM. The City sweeps either side of a street in a given area on two different days. Posted signs indicate both the time and day each side of the street is swept. Check posted signs for specific days and times.”3

So there is no single citywide day or hour. The two sides of one street are swept on different days, and the window can fall anywhere between 5 a.m. and 4 p.m. on a weekday3.

The lookup

The schedule lookup is the city’s “Refuse Collection Days and Street Sweeping Schedule” interactive map, linked from the Public Works Maps & GIS page2. It runs in the browser from a script, so its results are not reproduced here; open the city’s Public Works street-sweeping page, find the interactive map and enter the address12.

Rain

“Street sweeping may or may not occur on rainy days. You can check to see if street sweeping has been cancelled by calling (562) 570-2890. It is advised, however, that you always move your vehicle in accordance with the posted street sweeping signs.”1 The city’s parking page also lists a street-sweeping contact email, [email protected]8.

The 2026 holidays

“Street sweeping violations are not enforced on the city-observed holidays listed below.” The city’s holidays page lists 2026 only4:

Holiday Date in 2026
New Year’s Day January 1
Martin Luther King Jr. Day January 19
Presidents Day February 16
Memorial Day May 25
Juneteenth June 19
Independence Day July 4 (city-observed July 3)
Labor Day September 7
Election Day November 3
Thanksgiving November 26
Day after Thanksgiving November 27
Christmas December 25

Source:4. As of October 2026, the last four dates are still ahead. The page posts no 2027 list.

The same page states: “Citywide parking violations, including parking meters and pay stations, are enforced on holidays, unless the signs state ‘Except on Holidays.'” and “Red, white and blue curbs are always enforced, even on holidays.”4

Official pages disagree The holidays page says meters are enforced on holidays unless the sign says “Except on Holidays”4. The meters page lists the Downtown zone as enforced “9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday, excluding Sundays and holidays”, Belmont Shore and Retro Row as “excluding holidays”, and the Downtown Core and The Pike as “including holidays”9. The sign on the meter is the common point of the two pages.

Tickets

The city’s parking pages (parking, citations, FAQ, holidays and street sweeping) state no street-sweeping fine amount13458. The only city document found that carries one is a Master Fees and Charges Schedule attached to a council letter dated April 5, 2016, and no figure from a ten-year-old schedule is repeated here as a current amount10. What the citations page does state: a citation can be contested “within 21 days of the issuance date”; “The processing fee is $1.59 per citation, charged by the 3rd party vendor”; and late payment adds a penalty and may lead to “a hold on your vehicle registration”5.

The Citation Office is at 562.570.6822, Parking Enforcement at 562.570.2866 (after hours 562.435.6711) and Public Parking Information at 562.570.805548.

Preferential districts and the visitor permit

Parking-impacted areas are signed as preferential districts. The city’s page: “Preferential Parking Permits are issued to residents of designated Long Beach parking impacted areas.” “Permits are only valid for the district shown on the permit.”6 The FAQ adds: “Do not park in residential Preferential Parking Permit areas without City of Long Beach issued Preferential Parking Permit.”3

Permit Who it is for Terms as the city states them
Residential Residents of the district Up to three per household per year; annual fee “$34.00”; calendar-year permits “expire at midnight on December 31st”
Guest One per household per year Hung “from the rear-view mirror only”
Temporary “bona fide guests of residents” “valid for no more than seven (7) days”; “There is no fee for temporary permits”

Source:6. Temporary permits are issued to “existing Preferential Parking Account holders”, online, at City Hall or at select Council offices, so the resident, not the visitor, requests one6. “If a current permit is not displayed in the correct location, the vehicle may be issued a valid citation.”6

The city publishes the districts as a PDF map, “Preferential Parking Districts and Parking Impacted Areas”7. No page read lists which districts lie near the Convention Center, the beaches or the waterfront. Beach lots and their payment hours are in Downtown Long Beach Parking by Trip and Long Beach Beach Parking Lots.
